Creating Change in Denver – Things I Love

I can’t believe Creating Change is already half over!  There are a lot of great things happening here.  I’m going to post about some more details regarding my specific experiences, but here are just a couple of things I absolutely I love about being at Creating Change!

» Seeing queer people of color and a ton of programs about their experiences.

» Seeing queer people with disabilities and various programs about their experiences.

» Meeting people who openly identify as intersex.

» BONUS: Seeing Patty Berne receive an award for founding Sins Invalid: An Unshamed Claim to Beauty in the Face of Invisibility.

» Seeing people with trans, queer, and other non-conforming gender idenities AND getting to connect with them.

» Having the opportunity to practice using gender-neutral pronouns.  Sie, Hir, Hirs!

» Using gender-neutral bathrooms!  And I don’t mean those silly little “family restrooms.”  I mean all the big public restrooms are totally gender neutral (think Ally McBeal).

» Seeing all of the “Gay is NOT the new black” stickers that my friend Amit brought with him and has distributed throughout the conference.

» Seeing enough faux-haws (my own faux-faux-hawk included) to unionize.  I wonder if Dolores Huerta is still around!

I realize it’s “grammatically incorrect”, but wouldn’t it be easier to just adopt “they” as a gender-neutral first-person pronoun than to create new words? It’s already in (incorrect) colloquial use…
