Creating Change in Denver – First Reflections

Wow.  It’s 3:15 MST and I am sitting in the Denver airport waiting for my flight back to the midwest.  I still have a lot of things to write about from my weekend here at Creating Change… LGBT issues in athletics, intersections of faith and ideas around queer theology, my renewed energy for promoting gender neutral language, the significance of the Advocate’s claim that “Gay is the new black” and how hurtful such messages and ideas are to the unity of the LGBT movement and all civil rights, reaching out to support other movements and finding ways to make sure we not only recruit allies but we be allies to others…

It’s difficult to leave the conference, because there is something special about that environment.  I made awesome connections with some people that while they were short and thus not yet deep, were significantly more meaningful than a lot of the relationships in my current environment.  People understood and respected what I stood for and were supportive and willing to engage on those topics.  I could connect to others and learn tons of new things about aspects of their identities and experiences that are salient to them.  Creating Change is a vibrant, free environment and returning to the midwest will be a harsh reality check.

Luckily, I have some driving after my flight  back to reflect.  Stay tuned for more reactions and discussion from Creation Change ’09.

Welcome to all those of you who I met at Creating Change that are now reading my blog!!  I look forward to your feedback and engagement!
