Tax-Exempt Cake and Political Fundraising Too

Today we learned that Catholic congregations in Maine are fundraising to oppose marriage equality (Hat Tip: G-A-Y and Joe.My.God):

Guess what? That’s legal.

From my basic research on tax law and tax-exempt organizations, it seems that lobbying and support for political legislation do not have the same restrictions as supporting political candidates. In other words, churches can get involved pretty actively so long as they don’t name names.

Isn’t that convenient?
