Name: Lili Leon
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Why I Found Her at The NEM:
For Lili, her reasons for being at the march were quite simple. There did not seem to be issues she was specifically concerned about or specific struggles she faced as an individual herself. She is the epitome of an ally and friend. Lili explained that she has a lot of friends and family who are gay, and she is simply “here for everybody.”
While to some it might seem that Lili didn’t have much to say, I find a beautiful elegance to her response. She was not at the march of her own accord. She just knew that if she truly cared about the people in her life, she had to be there to show her support. It almost seemed that to her, she could not really be there for her loved ones if she were not quite literally there supporting them. How utterly sweet and humbling.
What She’d Change in America:
One of the most important issues Lili sees facing America is immigration, particularly when it comes to young people. She thinks we need to do more to help students who are trying to immigrate to pursue their education and to support other young people who are trying to find their way in the world.
Perhaps Lili herself could be the model we follow. We must be here for everybody.
