Names: Matt Perfetuo and Steve Riggle
Ages: 27 and 29
Hometown: New York City, NY
Occupations: Paralegal (Matt) and Actor (Steve)
Why I Found Them at The NEM:
Matt and Steve were kind enough to talk to me while Lady Gaga was speaking at the rally. We’ll all be able to say we knew exactly where we were when she asked Obama if he was listening.
Both these gentlemen are concerned about rights. Steve grew up in Wyoming and was a senior in high school when Matthew Shepard was beaten to death. Having been out since he was 14, those events really impacted his life. As he began dating more, he started realizing the rights he doesn’t have and decided it was time for him to stand up.
I kind of wondered if Matt had something to do with that. Matt made it clear: “They need to listen. We need action.” He wants the rights he’s due, and he was really glad to see us coming together as a community at the March. Marriage is on his to-do list, and I got the impression he wasn’t going to let anyone stop him from getting married.
What They’d Change in America:
A big issue for Matt is adoption. He thinks there needs to be open adoption for everybody, whether you’re single, married, gay or straight.
Steve has serious concerns about sustainability and energy use, pointing out that we’ll never succeed at restricting fossil fuels if we don’t build up our renewable resources.
