It seems that I am far from alone in my concerns about how Obama is serving (or rather not serving) the LGBT community. This just in from the GOProud splinter group of the Log Cabin Republicans (Hat Tip Joe.My.God):
I really don’t think too highly of the Log Cabin Republicans. I mean, they raise money for a party that openly opposes rights and protections for the queer community. It’s tough to find a lot of integrity in that. But honestly, I can’t say as I disagree with all that much in that video. I’m not sure the Exorcist theme music is an ideal choice, but it gets the point across.
What does it say that Obama’s inaction leads members of his own party to agree with Republicans? I actually wonder if this is a good sign in some ways.
I hope that all of us who are speaking out for equality are speaking out for the same equality. If we can agree to pursue those freedoms and protections without partisanship, then our movement grows stronger. It would blur the lines of “liberal” and “conservative,” so that advocating for rights isn’t about taking a party line. It’s about taking a human line.
Still, knowing how quick LCRs are to folding and supporting candidates that don’t support equality, it’s tough to be optimistic. GOProud’s legislative agenda isn’t all that attractive. Like most Republican platforms, it features a lot of provisions that benefit the wealthy and says little about actual queer rights. There’s no support for ENDA, hate crime legislation, or marriage equality (only opposing a constitutional amendment). I don’t want to call this group an ally, but at least in terms of what they’re saying today, I think I agree with them.
It’ll be interesting to see how things play out this weekend…
