Don’t Forget About Uganda

As we struggle with our own pathetic compromises on LGBT issues here in the US and the poor imprisoned Malawian couple hold our international attention, we forget about the horrid situation in Uganda. The virulent anti-homosexuality bill introduced last October is not dead, nor have conditions improved for gay and lesbian Ugandans.

This bill and these conditions are an immediate concern. The threat to gay Ugandans is an amplification of the anti-gay beliefs that persist here at home. The hate for gays heard in Uganda is founded on the same disgust and condemnation used to promote discriminator laws like Proposition 8.

These attitudes also make an interesting case study on the dangerous potential of religious belief and superstition.

Whether you’re convinced or not, you NEED to watch the video below. Current TV’s Vanguard did an in-depth investigation of life for gays in Uganda and the influence of American evangelical Christians on these passionately anti-gay sentiments. This video shows how far we have to go to resist Christian condemnation of homosexuality. It’s a hard video to watch, but an important one.
